Trees for Cape Town
In South Africa, as in many nations around the world, urban green space tends to be a marker of socio-economic inequality. Here there is a huge disparity between ʻleafyʼ privileged areas and ‘barren’ under-privileged areas.
To address this challenge, Greenpop started the Cape Town Urban Greening Programme (CTUGP) in 2010. This was Greenpop’s longest-running project and it sits at the core of what we do. Through this programme, we planted hundreds of trees and gardens at schools, clinics, houses of worship and community organisations on the Cape Flats.
From 2010 to 2017, Greenpop ran our Urban Tree Planting Programme. This programme operated through a series of planting days funded by various corporate sponsors. These days saw Greenpop staff coming together with community members and sponsor groups to plant trees, green the beneficiary site and learn about environmental action.
