Junior Communications Coordinator

Purpose of this role:

This is an exciting opportunity for a dynamic and savvy communicator, with a passion for social media, writing, and content creation, to join our communications team at Greenpop.

Our ideal candidate is able to navigate the digital marketing space well and is keen on continuous learning as the technologies of this field change regularly. We are dedicated to communicating our environmental message and telling personal, relatable stories about our work and programmes effectively to reach the right audiences through the right channels with the most current platforms and technologies. 

Our ideal candidate has a background in communication as well as writing, visual and social media skills. They will be a strategic, creative, and highly organised individual. 

The first 6 months of this role will entail working closely with our current Partnership and Communications Manager to allow time for training to learn the way we communicate and gain additional skills. After 6 months, there is potential to take on more responsibility and grow into the Communications Coordinator role. 

Your role will include but will not be limited to: 

  • Social Media – Creating all social media content and scheduling it (including posts, stories, reels, adverts)
  • E-Mail Marketing – Strategically developing our email marketing campaigns through MailChimp, creating an effective audience journey and good content
  • Press – Managing our media relations and content in the press, and crafting press releases.
  • Content Creation – Creating social media & mailer graphics with the use of Canva as well as basic photography and videography for social media.
  • Website Management – Making content updates on our WordPress website.
  • Analytics & Reporting – Reporting monthly on targets, achievements, and strategies, as well as platform analytics and performance.

Required experience and skills:

  • At least 1 year of work experience in a social media/communications role(s)
  • Certification or qualification in communications, marketing, or design is preferable but not required

Knowledge of the following would be advantageous, but not required. Training and support will be provided in the role.

  • Graphic design tools such as Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and Canva
  • E-mail marketing platforms such as MailChimp
  • Facebook and Instagram advertising
  • Social Media scheduling tools such as Hootsuite
  • Blog post writing
  • Search Engine Optimization
  • Editing & managing WordPress websites
  • Google Drive (Docs, Sheets, etc.)

Other requirements:

  • Valid South African ID or valid work permit if not South African
  • Based in (or willing to move to) Cape Town 
  • Must be willing to work in our office in Cape Town CBD for approximately 3 to 4 days a week (the rest can be remote working)
  • Must be willing to attend Greenpop events for work when required.


Negotiable depending on experience – estimated between R17 000 and R20 000 gross per month to start, with potential to grow this. There will be a review after the initial 6-month training period.
